On 1 October, the UK will join together to celebrate Older People’s Day. The rest of the world will take part in the UN’s International Day of Older Persons on the same day.

There are currently 700 million people over the age of 60 worldwide. By 2050, that will raise to two billion and people over the age of 60 will make up a fifth of the population.

By 2035, almost a quarter of the UK population will be aged 65 or over. This means it’s more important than ever that we are aware of the challenges faced by older people. As a charity that has been supporting older people in Britain for over 75 years, we work hard to enable older people to live later life well.

To celebrate Older People’s Day organisations across the UK, including MHA, will be hosting a variety of events and activities to highlight the contributions that older people make to our society.

So how can you get involved?

Here’s six ways you can help on Older People’s Day:

  1. Sign up to volunteer at one of our Live at Home community groups or care homes. We have a variety of volunteer roles, there’s something for everyone.
  2. Donate so we can continue helping older people to live later life well.
  3. Host a fundraising event to support our vital work.
  4. Use social media to highlight our work and the importance of Older Person’s day, use the hash tag #OlderPeoplesDay. Find ‘Methodist Homes’ on Twitter and Facebook to share content.
  5. Visit an older neighbour, sit down with them, have a chat and a cup of tea; this offer of support and companionship will make their day.
