Services for older people in Northwood

MHA Northwood Live at Home has been working with older people in the north of Hillingdon for over 21 years. Our aim is to bring quality to the lives of older people helping them to live later life well.

What do we offer

We produce a quarterly newsletter which outlines the supported social programme we offer. This shows where activities take place, timings and costs. All activities are subsidised and we are dependent on charitable giving and fundraising to cover associated costs. Please call 01923 842494 to receive a digital copy of the newsletter.

We work to keep people active and to help them find social support and friendship networks. This enables them to live in their own homes for as long as they are able, especially those who may have lost confidence or feel in need of additional support. If they are unable to come to activities for any reason we may introduce a volunteer befriender. For those who are still able to travel independently we encourage them to make their way to our activities but, if they have significant mobility issues, we work with volunteer drivers to assist as many as we can.

Where people are interested in things we do not offer or who need help with things we do not provide, such as financial advice or personal care, we signpost them to other organisations. We want older people to have longer, healthier lives, filled with purpose and a sense of belonging, with improved physical health and emotional resilience.

Who do we help

The staff team work with local volunteers to respond to people who are referred to us or who self-refer. We welcome anyone over 60 from diverse backgrounds and cultures. We are open to people of all faiths or none and we respect their beliefs and values. All members have an initial member assessment and regular reviews. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to support us and we take up references and DBS check all those who apply. We have some multi-generational trips and events to encourage volunteering children and young people to volunteer.

Information for businesses and corporates

MHA is able to subsidise many of its charitable services thanks to the generous contributions of businesses who want to make a difference in their local communities. How to get involved

Information for families and friends

If you’re looking at Live at Home to help someone you know, we understand. With a busy work life, family and other responsibilities, sometimes it just isn’t possible to travel regularly and give a loved one the dedicated care and support you wish you could provide. Refer a family member or friend

Information for healthcare professionals

If an older person in hospital has no family, friends or neighbours, we can assist them to return home. We work with GP practices, hospital discharge and re-enablement teams and Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to support older people adjust and settle back at home after a period in hospital. Refer a patient

Information for local authorities

Through our preventative, person-centred services, we can reduce the strain on local health services – delaying, minimising or even preventing people’s need for them. More information

Volunteers needed

Can you offer your time to prevent people from feeling lonely and isolated? Maybe you're looking to become more involved with your local community?

If this sounds like you, we need your help!

We are offering you the opportunity to help older people in your community live later life well. We run weekly groups for people aged 55+ and are looking for Volunteers to get involved for a few hours a month, whenever it suits YOU!

Perhaps you’d like to contribute a couple of hours to fundraise? Maybe you’d like to take part in a weekly lunch club serving freshly cooked meals to our members?

We know that your time is precious so we will work with you to make sure you get the most out of your experience with us. From working directly with the groups and running your own sessions, to representing the scheme at local events are many aspects of the organisation you can choose to get involved with!

If you are a good communicator who shares our values of helping eliminate loneliness in older people, get in touch.

We are always in need of befrienders and drivers.

"I taught my befriender how to bake a cake. We thoroughly enjoyed baking together, and I love her regular visits."

"… all the staff and volunteers could not be more genuine in their friendliness and care for us all ..."
